Here are a few words from our founder, resident travel expert and Blogger-in-Chief, Larry Shapiro:
If you love to travel and delight in experiencing people, places, culture and history through great food—all without breaking the bank—then Fork on the Run is for you. The goal of this site is to make travel more fun by uncovering exceptional eating and travel experiences that don’t cost a fortune.
The truth is I’d rather be roaming food stalls, open air markets and neighborhood cafes than hanging around museums or churches any day. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy visiting the top sites and attractions. But I’m also always figuring out where to eat next–not just to have a meal, but to experience the local food culture.
Here’s an example: While on a recent trip to Singapore, I was curious to see if I could find great things to eat while exploring the huge and lush Singapore Botanic Gardens. The answer is absolutely.
As it turns out, weekend brunch is a social and dining tradition that’s extremely popular among locals, with many terrific and varied restaurant venues to choose from. In fact, my outdoor brunch experience was the highlight of my visit to the gardens.
Travel Passion Started Early
I’m an inveterate traveler, and have been since I was about 10. That’s when I took my first international trip to Mexico. I had a ball. It was as though I had magically been dropped into another world I never knew existed.
Plus, it was an experience just after graduating high school which made me appreciate the challenges and excitement of every aspect of travel, including the journey itself.
I remember it well–talking my way into an upgrade (due to a boarding pass snafu) from the back of the plane to the two front row seats in first class on a United Airlines 747 headed to Hawaii with my high school sweetheart. I was on cloud nine. I still can’t believe I pulled that off.
And once you fly first class, you never want to sit in coach again. So since then I’m always angling to get an upgrade.
I’ve worked as a certified travel agent at a high-end travel agency, practiced law for many years and launched an award-winning publishing company, all the while seizing every opportunity to travel that came my way.
Between my law and publishing careers, I bought an around-the-world ticket and traveled for a year through Europe, Australia, New Zealand, India and Asia.
Gastro-Tourist
Travel is my passion and I also love to eat. You could call me a gastro-tourist. Few things thrill me more than planning my next trip and finding terrific travel and dining bargains along the way.
I’m excited to share my latest adventures and the travel tips I’ve learned. And I hope you’ll pass on your food and travel finds to me—and our readers.
